I went to an informational meeting yesterday and received a book including all of the costs. Although there is nothing about Italy, Greece, AND Sicily, it does mention a trip to Italy and Greece that costs $6,499. People to People is a legitimate program.

I have never actually been on a foreign exchange but I can give you some details. To start out, exchanges can last in different lengths: summer, semester, and year. Additionally, there are many ways to sign up through your school or companies. The three most trusted companies would be Rotary, YFU, and AFS. Rotary being the cheapest but the hardest to get in to. The age requirements are 15-18 for the average exchange but you can also go on a gap year (between high school and college) or in college. You go through an application process and once you make it in you are assigned a host family. As for scholarships, these are typically listed on the companies website and cost varies depending on country. Usually they cost somewhere between 9,000-12,000 dollars. You have to remember though this is covering travel and a semester or years worth of food. The websites are: yfu.org afs.org rotary.org The link below is some fund raising tips I strongly recommend looking at: http://yfuusa.org/media/Education/YFU_2008_Fundraising_Guidelines.pdf I hope this helps!

To be an exchange student overseas, would I need to speak the language of the country fluently?

To be an exchange student overseas, would I need to speak the language of the country fluently?
I am thinking of applying to do a student exchange in Italy, Germany or France. I do not speak any of these languages totally fluently (In fact I speak NO French). Would I still be able to do an exchange program in these countries? I can read and write in Italian and German, but cannot speak the languages very well. (The italian I do speak, is a dialect....)

Classes will be in the language of the country in which the schools are, so yes, you will need to understand the language well. If your courses require writing a paper, or a longhand answer on a test, you will want the language. It would be very rare for classes, lectures or lessons to be conducted in anything other than the local language. best regards, petr b.

no you dont need to speak the language fluently because it is an educational experience. you just need to have studied the language for 3 yrs in most cases but for some countries you dont have to have learn the language at all t go on exchange. dont worry its really hard to learn a language the best way is to live the language!

I think you need to know the gist of it so you can get through it. My sister hosted a Spanish exchange student once, she was really nice. Her English was a bit rough, but understandable. I'm not sure how she did at the school. But I'm not sure if the course work you do in their classes counts. I'm not too keen on exchange programs. Take it as a learning experience, not as a test for how well you can say 'Can I get a beer' in German (what is the drinking age there?) If you still aren't sure...take an exchange trip to America or Canada. Although traveling to the latter may be bad for your mental health.

English is the universal language, you can get by with it almost anywhere ... except the United States, where it is becoming obligatory to be fluent in Spanish.

It depends on what classes you're going to take while you're there. I studied abroad in France, and didn't speak any French when I went there. I ended up speaking it relatively well when I came home...however, all the teens in Paris wanted to practice their English with me, so I wasn't around very much French other than in my language classes! Hope this helps! LC-B

You are definitely still able to go on exchange. As long as you learn some basics during orientations and such, you should be fine. I've actually heard of people going on exchange without any knowledge of their host country's language and doing just fine, with the help of a dictionary, of course. So, as I said, you should be alright. :)

If your are speaking of a high school exchange, some countries have a language requirement in place, others do not. For example, if you want to go to France or the French speaking portions of Switzerland or Belgium, you must have had two years of high school French. Germany, on the other hand, has no language requirement. If you can write German -- you'll be way ahead of most others going! It's a tough language -- even the Germans can't speak it (or so says the father of one of our German exchange kids -- the father is a German teacher LOL).

What foods do they not have in Italy?

What foods do they not have in Italy?
I'm going to be a foreign exchange student in Italy next year and I want to bring them American food that they don't have there (ketchup, peanut butter, etc.) I don't know if they have ketchup or peanut butter, but anyways... Any ideas?

Obviously in Italy there is Ketchup! With regard Peanut butter, it's less common, but you can find it.
2 :
Good ketchup like heinz is difficult to find. So is peanut butter, I see it in a tiny jar and it cost around 4.50 euro. Syrup for pancakes I don't ever remember seeing.
3 :
You can find things like maple syrup, peanut butter and ketchup in the stores here - Ipercoop carries all of these where I live. There just aren't the same brands or number of brand choices. Sometimes I bring back See's peanut brittle when I've been in the US. It's also difficult to find things like cheddar cheese, ginger snaps, or sourdough bread.
4 :
They like American chocolate, especially Hershey bars, and American cigarettes, if you are old enough.
5 :
Syrup for pancakes, peanut butter (I have never seen that in my life). I would not bring cheddar cheese as Italian cheeses taste better. Avoid very spicy sauces as Italians don't like them
6 :
the only food that you will not find in italy is that one genetically modified, because it is considered illegal in italy
7 :
Gravy. My ensligh boyfriend was desperate because he could not find any shop who sell that stuff :) and actually I never heard they sell peanut butter as well
8 :
In Italy there is the American and Italian ketchup. We have everything, but not in all supermarkets. If you want American food is more easier to find in the big supermarkets.
9 :
They don't have pot. But don't bring it though, as another murder in Italy of an american exchange student is unwanted.
10 :
We do have ketchup, I think that peanut butter is available in some big supermarkets, but it must be quite uncommon since I've never seen it, same for maple syrup. We don't have pancakes, you might try to make them!
11 :
I returned from America a few days ago, actually we have all the same your products. came to my mind now , it is true that you do for Thanksgiving turkey stuffing?! it will be good I suppose, is not common here ... try with that! another thing that I liked them more than that here is the cheese cake =) ah, no pizza! =) In new york i've seen pizza with pasta or with strawberries, it's not possible!!! lol
12 :
We don't have peanut butter. But we have a famous hazelnut cream.
