What is the cheapest way to get from Columbus, Ohio to Italy?

What is the cheapest way to get from Columbus, Ohio to Italy?
Hi everyone. I am an Ohio State student interested in visiting Italy this summer (2011). Money is a huge issue, so I am looking for the cheapest way to get there. I have heard that flying into Europe somewhere besides Italy and catching a train is cheaper than a direct flight. Can someone please provide advice/guidance as to how to get there as cheap as possible? It would be greatly appreciated!

The best way is to go onto orbitz.com choose the flexable plans link near the bottom. it will give you a 30 day price range. You can put in how long you want to go as well. You can put in different airports. I heard that going to london and taking the train to italy is a little cheaper. but i hope you have an extra 4 days for that (2 there , 2 back). Need pass port of course. good luck

Has anyone here been on a Student Exchange to another country?
I want to go on an exchange to Italy and I was just wondering if anyone has been on a student exchange to Italy or some other country. Was it worth while going? Are you please that you went? Would you recommend to others that they go? I just want to know if it was an experience that you will never forget and has it helped you in the future? Thanks for your answers.

I did 2 student exchanges - a year in France when I was in high school and a semester in Germany when I was at university. It was defintely worhtwhile and I would definitely do it again and tell others to do it. When I have kids, I'm also going to hope that they go on an exchange. It's such an amazing opportunity to live in another country with a family, learning a new language, making new friends, and seeing things you would never have experienced back home. The experience also completely changed my future career plans. Before going abroad, I thought I would be a doctor or dentist, but instead got a job with a multinational company that has allowed me to work and travel around the world

Yes, most universities have over seas programs or exchange programs. But beware that anti-Americanism is currently extremely strong in Italy. Recently a US student studying there was accused and convicted of murder with extraordinarily weak evidence.

Can I change my schengen tourist visa to a type d student visa whilst in italy?

Can I change my schengen tourist visa to a type d student visa whilst in italy?
I currently have a schengen tourist visa (issued by the italian embassy), valid for six months and allows me to travel to all schengen states. I have recently applied to a university in italy, I have been accepted and I am in the process of enrolling. My question is this... If I go to italy on my visitors visa (type c), can I whilst there, change my -visa status- from type c to an Italian type d? OR will I have to leave italy and apply for a new student schengen? Can a italian student schengen be added on anyway? I want to do this as my course starts in a month and I understand that applying for a student visa could take a very long time, and i would like to be able to start as soon as i have applied at the consulate there. I am not extremely worried about loosing my tourist status to a student status, as because my course is longer than a year, I am told that I can apply for temporary italian residency which will also allow me to move freely within the schengen states during my term breaks. Is this true? I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find a specific answer. ANY information from someone who has had something similar would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No you can't Schengen visas are short term visas issued under set rules. You cannot convert a Schengen visa into a national longer term study visa. Italy does not allow you to apply for national visas while in the country, so you have to apply for such a visa from outside of the country.

Would high school students be able to drink while on a field trip to Italy?

Would high school students be able to drink while on a field trip to Italy?
I am an 18 year old high school student from the United States and my class is going to Italy this spring for a field trip. Some of my friends and I were wondering if we would be able to drink while we were out un Italy. What are the drinking age limits in Italy? Are there any restrictions on us drinking because we're Americans?
Law & Ethics - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There is no law stating a limit of age for drinking any kind of alcoholic drink, art 689 Codice Penale forbids serving alcoholic drinks to minors under 16 in public places like restaurants, pubs, etc. A proposal to increase the purchasing age to 18 has been rejected by parliament in 2007. Your teachers may be risking their jobs if they allow you to drink, its not just about the law. When I was 12 years old we went to France (from UK) where we were allowed to drink wine, but the teachers made us keep the bottles off the tables, I think so they would not be in a photos
2 :
You can drink. My school [UK] go around europe all the time. The teachers don't enjoy it, but who cares. They impose restrictions on you such as being 'home' at a certain time. But no, no laws stopping you. Its legal! Enjoy
3 :
There is no law about you drinking but since you are traveling with you school you are required to follow the rules they set out. If you are drinking your chaperones could cause problems for you when you return. You could get suspended from school. If your chaperones are cool then you probably will be able to sample and drink a little as long as you act responsibly and appropriately and don't get piss ass drunk. You are of legal drinking age in Italy though.
4 :
I'm Italian. Yes, you can drink alchol in Italy from 16 years old. There are any restriction on you!

I am going to be 16 next summer when I leave and I'm a girl). I'm not sure where to go....I've narrowed it down to Thailand, Finland, and Italy. I was set on Thailand, but now I'm having second thoughts because I'm afraid Thailand will be too reserved and strict. Please, please, please help me decide! I'll be spending next summer in whatever country I choose with a host family. The exchange program I'm using is AFS.

May I suggest YFU (Youth For Understanding)? I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer with. When I have asked exchange students why they chose YFU, I get the following answers: (1) YFU gave them more bang for their buck and/or (2) someone they knew and trusted recommended YFU. 95% of the fees collected by YFU go for direct program costs (airline tickets, support in hosting country, etc.). YFU has been around for 59 years and has learned how to make exchanges successful. The main website has a ton of information! This year they have programs to Japan but not Italy. I know they have had programs to Italy in the past, so they may be re-instated - I don't know. Which ever program you choose, make sure they are listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit programs for quality. Note: you will need to be 15 before you can go. Being an exchange student requires a certain level of maturity that people under 15 usually don't have. The process would be (more or less) as follows: a) Gather info and talk to your parents, teachers, and school counselor. b) Apply for the program and/or a scholarship. (Online, over the phone, by fax or mail, etc.) You will need to choose your country and length of stay. (YFU offers programs to 39 countries this year, only 9 of which require that you study it's language before you go.) c) After the organization reviews your file, participate in an in-person interview. This is to make sure you were honest and accurate on your application and to make sure you're placed with the appropriate host family. d) Pay for the program. e) After you get a host family, correspond with them. (Not officially required, just something I think is an extremely good idea.) f) Go and work hard and enjoy. g) Come home and share your experience. The cost depends on where you go and for how long. Summer programs will generally be $6500 to $8000. Semester and year programs will be $8000 to $11000. The largest costs are getting you there and back and training the volunteers that you'll be relying upon when your there. These costs don't change much if you're there for a summer versus a year. Check out the website - it should answer most (if not all) of your questions (even ones you haven't thought of yet). Good luck to you no matter what you choose.

How can I get the chance to become an exchange student? (overseas)?
I am so jealous of this girl in my school, she went to Italy for the student exchange :( I've wanted to be an exchange student since a long time ago since Im really interested in studying cultures from different ethnics in different places. well what country are you from (if not America) IM from Australia and am going on exchange later in the year Steps: 1. Choose a Program, if you are in a Australia then some good ones are 'Southern Cross Cultural Exchange' (The one i'm using) or AFS 2. Depending on were your going and how long it should vary, but it should be anything between 7,000 and 11,000. Often the length of the program your using does not effect the cost as the cost is mainly for tickets 3. Regarding that you choose a proper well known organization it is very safe. You should have a overseas coordinator and each member of you host family will have been thoroughly screened and background checked. If there are any issues between you and your host family then often the program is quick to find you a replacement one. 4. Like i said i am leaving in about 2 months for America and i'm staying for 5 months. I have started a vlog on Youtube following my time in America and you can watch it here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo53ayYAp9s you can leave any comments or contact me with any questions at anytime i am greatly looking forwards to it and it should be one of the greatest experiences of my life, i strongly suggest looking into it Any additional information you might need to know: As far as I know you can be involved from ages 14-18 (this will depend on you organization) They send you to almost all the countries in the world (this will depend on your organzation) The application program can often be long So this is all that I can think to tell you at the moment, however keep in mind that this only applies to the Australian organizations and im not sure what it is like for other countries Iook into it as it should be an amazing experience and definatly not one to be forgotten. Keep watching my Vlog and contact em with any questions >_< Good Luck

Italy has better architecture and more "history" in my opinion. There was the roman empire and so many great things there. Even religious influences, mostly catholicism seeing as the Vatican is also in Italy. Its a very relaxed place with a lot of friendly people and a great culture. In my opinion, France is a great place but its too much like almost any English speaking country. Don't get me wrong, I love france, but I felt like I hadn't even left english territory and there wasn't anything exciting that I hadn't already seen before.
2 :
Hi TimTam! I would say it depends on your personal style and interests. Italy is very "old world," and the place for art and history, for rather obvious reasons. The people are quite gregarious and friendly, which would be a pretty easy transition for a Kiwi. Personally, I also really, really love the Italian language :) Then there's France, which is a little bit more reserved and traditional. Regarding the other commenter, I wonder if they are from the UK, because that's the only way their comment makes sense to me. Even then, I would hardly say France is like any other English country! I'm from the United States, and absolutely adored my trips to France. I also didn't think Paris or Cannes were anything like London, where I've also lived. So France is a bit more sophisticated and under-stated, and fiercely protective of its culture. France has a bustling film industry, arts culture and the fashion industry. If you want a full immersion European experience, go for France. It's hard to describe... France is just indescribably French! A friend of mine lived there for an extended period of time after university, and pines for it to this day. She absolutely adored living there. Language-wise, though, French verbs scare me. But then again, I speak German :) Talk to your exchange organization and ask them for specific information on their programs in France and Italy. Where are most of their students placed? (especially in relation to cities) Can they put you in contact with returnees or current students living in both countries so you can hear their stories? What is school like in both countries? Good luck! You have a difficult choice to make :) (personally? culture-wise I'd go for France -- even though I'm Italian (for shame!) -- but language-wise, Italy, all the way!)

4 :
If you choose to study in towns where other students are, you can find a lot of people speaking English. However if you choose to travel down there to learn the language it might not be the smartest move. Sometime people learn best when there are no other options because humans are lazy by nature and will try to group with people like themselves rather than taking on the challenge and the risk of mixing with locals. We are warned by our local agencies about legal risks based on the on-going trial against an exchange student down there. I will wait until she is acquitted before considering this country as exchange student. Also I have learned that some have become in trouble in Italy just because they have not kept all the receipts for purchases done while they were studying down there. We are talking of 1,000 thousand of dollars in fine, if you miss saving just one receipt. Apparently the police can ask you at any time if you got receipts for your purchases.

Students and parents who must deal with the high cost of a college education have available to them a wide range of student loans. This article offers details on three general types of student loans. Unlike other student loans, application for a specific Stafford Loan should be preceded by the filing of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application should be made in the name of the aspiring student. http://www.worldbestloans.com/student-loans.htm Like some other student loans, application for the Signature Loan permits the use of a co-signer. In fact, there is a real advantage to applying for a Signature Loan with a co-signer.

Goodness, I would think they have fruit and veggies in Italy, not to mention PASTA
2 :
You should be OK as there's plenty of good food there, meat or no meat. You'll more likely be out of place if you don't smoke !!
3 :
You'll be ok, lots of different foods there and VERY GOOD PASTA!!!
4 :
Hi, I gave a thumbs down to two people for saying ''pasta''. Many pasta's are non vegan, they contain eggs or milk. :-)
5 :
Don't let this stop you. It's not like being vegan is some sort of disability that would render you incapable of enjoying this experience. FYI - Fresh pasta generally has eggs. Dried pasta is generally vegan. Learn a little Italian so you can explain what you do and do not eat. If you're worried about offending people and are OK with a little white lying, you can say you're allergic to dairy and eggs, that's not unheard of. Kind of sad that people will respect someone's allergies but not their personal food choices, but sometimes that's how it goes. Good luck!
6 :
Try and find out where you'll be in Italy in advance, and try and find out a bit about foods and what's available in that area. That should make it a bit easier to plan for any difficulties. Might also help to learn the Italian phrases for "I am vegan" and "no animal products" etc. if you have to explain. As long as youre polite and respectful, don't be apologetic. You have as much right to have your lifestyle as anybody else.
7 :
Italian cuisine is no where what The states have recognized it as. Italian cuisine mainly consists of fresh fruit, fresh veggies, and pasta's. We have embellished our thoughts of Italian cuisine in the U.S. as compared to the real Italian cuisine. Aside from that, you will have better luck with en tree's out there as compared to the U.S. Good luck and enjoy!
8 :
Here is the reality. You cannot go and move into a host's home for five weeks and expect them to cater to your diet. You may or may not be able to live five weeks on a vegan diet. You may have to compromise from time to time and just eat vegetarian. Also, it would be quite rude of you to expect them to buy the items you need each day to get your protein. Italians embrace food both meat and vegetables and different parts of the country eat very differently. So unless you are planning packing a lot of euros to give the family to provide you wiht your soy, flaxseed crap or whatever, I wouldn't expect it. If you cannot risk not eating vegan, then I would suggest staying home so you do not offend anyone and cause an international incident with your rigid ways.
9 :
If you cannot find a vegan family over there you should stay home. Sometimes we cannot have it our way.

I'm considering hosting a 17 year old high school student from Italy. I know that I will get more information at orientation, but I'm wondering what kinds of real life experiences some of you might have that you'd be willing to share with me. Unexpected things happening...emergencies...money issues...language/communication problems...and good stuff too, of course! How did the student impact your day-to-day life? How did s/he get along with your children? Did you learn anything from your student? I'm interested in your experiences and your responses! Thank you.

i was an exchange student so i can tell you about that. it was one of the most wonderful things i have ever done my family were lovely and i made some great friends. of course it is sometimes hard. i depends on how long you have your student for? you really need to be considerate of them make sure that they know that if they have a problem you are there to help. put Your self in their shoes and imagine how hard it is to live in a different country without your family. language is hard at first but if you are there to help them learn then that is the best way to over come that.. money i didn't really have problems apart from if you go out as a family make sure that your family doesn't pay for just you and not your student :( but mostly just do it.. it is an amazing experience and you will have a new family member learn lots about your self and the student and one day you might be able to visit them in italy good luck!

I've been hosting for 15 years. Out of those, 13 were fabulous. So, that's pretty good odds! The first thing to remember is that your student is a member of your family and NOT A GUEST. He or she should participate in all your family activities to include chores, visits to grandma, and whatever you do! You should not force them to attend church however if they are not willing. As to money, a high school foreign exchange student comes expecting to pay for all personal expenses and especially medical ones. They should have their own medical insurance and most have insurance that covers other things as well (breakage, accidents, etc.). It's best to get the insurance information as soon as they arrive. This is important: YOU DO NOT PAY ANY MEDICAL BILLS OR SIGN FOR THEM. You can authorize treatment as a guardian but you are not responsible for medical bills. You should not pay for any of your student's school expenses -- text book rental, pay to play, etc. Depending upon your program you may or may not pay for school lunches. The same goes for sports shoes, T-shirts, uniforms, etc. As for other activities, here is how I put it to our host families ... "If you go out to dinner and a movie as a family, pay for your student. If he or she is out on his/her own with friends, they pay for themselves." If you don't have teenagers at home, ask the school counselor or a teacher to find some teens that will "mentor" your student. There are things only teenagers know -- especially at school! Have them take your student shopping for American clothes, introduce them to others, etc. With an Italian, language could be a bit of an issue at first. One trick is to never ask a "yes" or "no" question. They will most likely answer "yes" to be polite and not really know what you said. Ask them to repeat it! Fortunately, Italians learn English easily! Another thing, don't let them be on the computer back home too much. Communicating in Italian will definitely hurt his/her English ability. You may be doing some homework help in the beginning too. We don't have natural children, so the it does indeed affect our life when our kids get here! We go to their athletic events, have friends in the house, yell at them to turn the music down, and make lots of popcorn! But it's a lot of fun. We've also had the fun of going to Europe three times now to visit - a definite plus to the experience. I always try to have a relationship with the student's parents by letter or e-mail as well. That's helpful. Hope that helps some! Have fun!

Is it legal to work while study in Italy, for foreign students?

Is it legal to work while study in Italy, for foreign students?
I ask this because I've seen both yes and no as answers here, in different places. I've been recently accepted in to Florence Design Academy. I can't afford the expenses there if I'm not allowed to work, part-time as a student. The student visa requires a declaration that I would not work during the period of study, but here I've many people saying it's allowed. BTW I'm from India. I've been to an Indian consulate and there I've got the details.

If you violate the conditions of your visa, you can be deported if you are caught. This is a matter of Italian law and I do not know how an Indian Consulate could give official advice.
2 :
We have a common business and tourist visa in Europe (Schengen visa) however the provisions of the national immigration law of the individual countries apply. You may have read that students were allowed to work in the United Kingdom, in France, or in Germany. Italy does not apply to those provisions. A foreign student visa applicant has to forward the following document: Undertaking by the school that the applicant will not work in Italy during the validity of study visa. http://www.vfs-italy.co.in/PDF/CHCKLIST-STUDY-VISA.pdf .. You probably may also have heard that European Union passport holders were authorized to work in Italy; this is based on EU treaty rights. European Union citizen are authorized to live and work in all countries of the union..

It is definitely cheaper to live in Italy. France is a very expensive country to live in, especially Paris! Unless you only decide to eat bread for lunch everyday (but even that is more expensive than in other places). It's about 4 euros (about 8 US dollars) for concentrated orange juice, just in a sketchy restaurant.

Studying in Italy is pretty much like studying anywhere else. You have schools with very rigorous programs and schools that are more laid back. In general, exchange students are given more flexibility by teachers because they understand that you need a period of adjustment. They also understand that your priorities are to learn more about the culture and the language, and not so much about chemistry or algebra... Talk to your study abroad program advisor and try to decide on the right school and location for you. Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity, so don't worry about it. You'll be just fine. Good luck!

I recommend checking out http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ It's a site written for exchange students by former (and current) ones. If your questions aren't answered there, you can write in and ask!

Studying in Italy would be a great experience for you! It's always going to be difficult to adjust to the new environment at first, but I bet you'll have so much that you won't even realize you're in another country. Here's a good site that tells you about studying abroad in Italy: http://www.studyabroaddomain.com/italy.aspx To help you pay for your experience you can get a scholarship. Scholarships are free sources of money that you can use to help pay for your trip. The best thing about them is that you don't have to pay them back! What is the cheapest way to learn Italian in Italy on a student Visa? / tutoring on the side? Part time studen?

What is the cheapest way to learn Italian in Italy on a student Visa? / tutoring on the side? Part time studen?
What schools would be most cost effective and quality at the same time? Would I be able to tutor English on the side to earn a bit while there? Is there an English proficiency exam I could take to prove my competency in English? I am an American but I know this does not automatically qualify anyone to tutor. I may have one semester of tutoring experience (with my jr. college) by the time I come to Italy. Any tips on schools, lodging/rentals, least expensive ways to shop for food clothes and so on.....I would be vary grateful! Also, can I get a travel visa to Italy if I am only taking one Italian or two courses? Is there a minimum required amount of courses to get student visa? I hope very much to see Italy next year and learn Italian fluently (is so Bollo!) I can hardly wait to see the Treve Fountain and learn the language and experience the people and culture! Thank you again.... Ciao! P.S. Thinking of Rome or Milan but I would love suggestions on places to see or study.....

Milan & Rome are fun cities but smaller ones like Padua, Bologna or Perugia (big university towns) may be more for you. You'll also find more people needing your English lessons! Note that many Italian cities & towns offer free Italian lessons to foreigners. These lesson are offered by the municipalities themselvs. Note that many Italian cities have English language available on their home pages: http://iat.comune.bologna.it/IAT/IAT.nsf

It is too late to go to italy on a student exchange?
Hi, im currently in gr10 attending a state school in australia, im 16. For anyone that doesn't know its 3rd term for us and we are half way through it. For awhile i have been thinking of going on a student exchange to italy, my parents are all cool with it. I can either choose between AFS, Student exchange Australia and Rotary. AFS Year Program - september to July 2011 - $10'700 - not sure about deadline but i think i might of missed out Student Exchange Australia 10 months - sep 2010 to july 2011 - $10'800 - deadline (1st april missed) could i somehow organise something for me around this time 6 months - Jan 2011 to June - $9'800 - 1st october deadine available 10 months - jan 2011 to october - $10'800 - 1st october deadline available I would love to go to italy has anybody had an expierences there? Questions 1. Is it too late for me to go to italy as in age 2. Will it affect my education when i get back to Australia 3. Which program do u guys think i should go on 4. Actually you're in High School. In Australia, State School refers to primary schools, not high school. As the academic year in Europe begins in September, and that's when most exchange students begin their studies, you've definitely missed this deadline. But you could still scrape in for the January program. The best thing to do is contact the organisations running this program and see if places are still available. If there are places, you'll need to meet the application deadline to ensure you have time to get a visa. One thing you haven't mentioned is language. Do you actually speak some Italian, because this is a requirement for an Italian exchange through Student Exchange Australia. See the FAQs on their website: http://www.studentexchange.org.au/faq/ And are your parents aware of the costs involved?

URGENT! Can I go to Italy study abroad without a student visa?
I received my U.S. citizenship late and therefore the Italian consulate gave me the 14th as appointment date, and I must leave by the 12th. 1. What are the chances if I just go straight to the consulate and ask them to do a student visa quickly for me because of the emergency 2. Can i go there without a visa, i think they let U.S. citizens stay there for 3 months without a visa. and I can come back during those 3 months to get my visa signed, or not. WILL this way work???

You can certainly go to Italy as a visitor from the US without a visa. However, I recommend though that you call the university right now and ask for advice as the Italians are entitled to refuse you a student visa if they see your study start date is before your application date and that your passport is stamped as having entered as a visitor. Generally countries work on a reciprocity basis. As the US enforces a 'no entry without the correct visa' policy on Italians, they are perfectly entitled to do the same to you. It's called 'the law of unintended consequences'. Amazing how that works.

How can I make my new foreign exchange student feel more welcome?

How can I make my new foreign exchange student feel more welcome?
Yesterday, my family picked up our new foreign exchange student from Italy. I want things to go very smoothly and I want her to not feel too homesick. Any tips or advice on how to make this all work well? All will be appreciated.

i would suggest that at least once a week have italian food and the rest american or what ever you desire. show her around little italy so she can see if it's anything like her home town, but also be aware that she came over here for a reason so don't be afraid to ask her if their is anything she would like to see. i hope this works. good luck!
2 :
It is very nice of you to be concerned about her, and that will probably make more difference than anything. I have worked with a lot of foreign exchange students, and the ones who were happiest with their homestays were always those who had hosts who weren't just renting out a room but rather took the time to include them in their families. Help her meet other young people, both from your country and other foreign exchange students in the area. Having friends she can talk to will make her feel at home. Take her out to see local sites. Tell her about some of the things to do in the area, and ask her what she'd like to do. Trying new experiences is probably the most exciting part of living abroad. Even seemingly mundane things like bowling can be interesting in a new country because it fives you a glimpse at a new culture and how people live & interact. Ask her to teach you a few Italian phrases and maybe some dishes or whatever it is she can to help her feel like she's contributing to the family. Keep a sense of humor, and show her it's ok to make mistakes, like when you stumble over Italian phrases. That way she'll know you understand when she struggles with English. Ask if the local elementary school would like her to come in and talk to the kids about her native land. This will help her feel proud of her culture & connect with the community. Schools often have international festivals, or she could talk to a class that is studying the Roman Empire. Also give her the chance to have some alone time when she needs it. She may get depressed from time to time, and it's ok if she's a little sad. If you see her in a mood like that for more than a couple hours, just do a quick check-in with her and invite her to go out to dinner or even just grocery shopping or whatever it is you would do regularly, or ask if she'd like to invite one of her new friends over. If you can give her access to the Internet to keep in touch with friends & family at home, that would be great, too.

I'm in love with a foreign exchanged student from Italy...?

I'm in love with a foreign exchanged student from Italy...?
There's a foreign exchanged student from Italy at my school, he's a senior and I'm a freshman, but we slow danced at my school dance like for 4 songs.. and i just fell in love. It was so romantic and I couldn't stop thinking about him that night when I laid down on my bed. I dremt about him, too, LOL :P then we started talking on the phone alot and became good friends. Then to make a long story short TOTAL DRAMA flipped out and I kind of had to stop talking to him to stop it. So I haven't talked to him in like two weeks and he leaves to go back to Italy on Nov. 25 and I just can't stop thinking about how I don't want him to leave without me getting his like phone number or email address. His name is Luca and he is so cute! Everybody at my school is in love with his body. At lunch I can't help but glance at him every 2 seconds and everytime I look he's looking BACK. it gives me total butterflies. What should I do? I cannot just go up to him at lunch because of the drama...

should I go on a student exchange? Italy? USA? or France?

should I go on a student exchange? Italy? USA? or France?
Im really wanting to go on a student exchange. Im a bit cautious though because what happens if the host family is really mean? really poor? or I don't get along with them? Also, Im wanting to go to either Italy, USA, or France. Which one should I go to? I want to go to italy because its the fashion capital of the world and I love the language. But then I want to go to USA because I love how they have cheer-leading and football teams, prom and cafeterias and its familiar to what i'm used to. but then theres France, which would be amazing as the food is amazing and the scenery is incredible. help! which one should i go to?

I was an exchange student as a Junior in High School and would do it again if I could. It was nearly 20 years ago and I went to Bolivia from the USA for 5 months. I think that if you can do it you should. I did not pick the country it picked me. So if you have a choice Pick the one that you would regret to not have gone to. Have a great time and travel while you are there.

May I venture to suggest France? Ths is from far the nicest conutry in the world.... People are lovely, landscapes are often breathtaking,, not to mention the food 'amazing!) and the social system !! If I were In your shoes, I wouldn't hezitzte one second !!

Forget the USA, and toss a coin for Italy or France.
4 :
Italy should be your first choice , then France.. both beautiful countries...USA would by my very last choice .

France
6 :
lalala it's not just personal preference if ur going w/ a exchange program such as yfu or afs then there r different requirements &brief introductions on each country. I wanted to go to France, for example, but it is required dat you speak french, or else attending a French school would be completely pointless, and you'll fail all your classes. My top choice would be France , but I have to warn you that from peronal experience french schools are extremely hard and difficult. It might not seem appealing for you at the moment, but definitely try other, more laid back, european countries. such as iceland, sweden etc. great places!! You most certainly don't have to go to one of the "Main" countries in europe, besides everyone(in iceland/sweden/holland)speaks english, so communication would not be difficult. Very little homework, so it would be a fun trip ^^ i mean im sure u wouldn't want to work your ass off, when being an exchange student is supposed to be something fun, not stressful :P hope dis helped ^^
7 :
I'm from the USA on an exchange in France this year. I gotta say, the USA really sucks compared to this country, but I've never been to Italy so I can't help you there. You should choose the country in which you know the language the most. That will really help.

Would you rather be a foreign exchange student to Italy or Japan? Why?

Would you rather be a foreign exchange student to Italy or Japan? Why?
I've been thinking a lot about being a foreign exchange student but I can't decide where I want to go. Either Italy or Japan. I Italy because it's really pretty, they have good food, their boys are cute, they have a lot of culture, and the language would be easier to learn. I like Japan because I can get a full paid scholarship, there's not a big crime rate, they care about education, and they also have an interesting culture. I still can't decide which one I like more. Also, if anyone has any other information on Italy or Japan (school, family life, culture, ect.) please tell me. And I am open to all opinions so anyone can answer.

Absolutely Japan! You kidding!! why would you think of Italy If you'll have a full paid scholarship!! Though the language is hard to learn. But there are trillions of other advantages! Japanese culture is 180 degrees different from other cultures. it's unique. you might find alot of similarities between your culture and the Italian's whereas the Japanese will be a completely different and exciting experience. I would choose Japan!!
4 :
I was an exchange student to Switzerland. Italy was my first choice. I had the opportunity to visit Italy however. Personally, I'd pick Italy. Culture shock is already a factor in exchange--and well--how much do you want? The language is a big deal during exchange as well. At the beginning my French was bad, by December I was dreaming and thinking in French, by July when I left, I was fluent. Italian is a lot easier than Japanese. You'll probably be fluent in Italian but I'm not sure about Japanese after your year is over. But it's really up to you! The scholarship is a big help!! I hope you go somewhere cause it's a great experience! Sometimes a difficult one--but a rewarding one!

Check with your local pizza shops. Explain to them your situation. Find the best deal (lowest pizza cost), wherein you sell pizza (or coupons to redeem one), whereas the proceeds, or portion thereof goes toward the trip. Then tie the promotion up with a marketing approach. Ex. selling pizza for non-traditional events, such as Christmas pizza, Engagement pizza, Halloween pizza, etc. Send a free pizza to your local newspaper/tv station for free publicity. Approach some organizations that have large amounts of people, ask them to support you by buying your pizza (ex. real estate brokers, teachers meeting, churches, youth group, local auto dealers, policemen, firemen, hospital, etc.
2 :
My friend in high school used to by candybars and stuff like that in bulk (try one of those warehouse places like Costco or Sams Club) and sell them to people at school for a profit. I don't know how much he made, but if you start now you could certainly supplement whatever you make with a real job.
3 :
sell yourself for hard labor and also pick a corner and invest in a tight mini skirt... if your a guy, that should be interesting, lol I am kidding... just work your butt off and try to get involved in a fundraiser. If you have any family you could ask them to donate money to help get you there. Good luck

You are going to love Italy, the men there are beautiful, they very charming and try to help you a lot. Italians are very happy and funny, nothing is bad for them. Places to visit there, of course, VENICE,MILAN and if you are religious, go to the Vatican pay a visit, people say is beautiful, and it is other country too. In Rome, you can go to the Coliseum, Fontane de trevi, but they have a lots of tourist guides for the city, they can tell you tips, give you maps you are going to be very happy if your travel. Enjoy the school and the travel.
2 :
The Italians mostly wear shorts at resorts, usually not in large cities. Be very careful never to wear them in churches. Some churches have monitors outside and will not let people in unless properly clothed. At St. Peters, no shorts, plunging neck lines, bare shoulders or even very short skirts. You will be turned away. Outside of Rome, you less likely to encounter clothing police. As a matter of courtesy, dress appropriately in any religious building. This is appreciated by the locals. Women can get away with shorts some places, but men in shorts is frowned upon unless at a beach or in a resort setting. Fashion goes to extremes in Italy. It starts in the streets among teenagers and ends up on runways, or it starts on runways and within a week shows up in market stalls. Many Italians don't bother with fashion at all, but they almost all have style. They dress. They are saying something even if they don't know what and you can't get the message. Not very many Italians turn out in the morning and grab what is on top of the "clean dirties" pile. Instead, they have a usually small assortment of clothes that place them in their chosen group. It isn't casual, although the style may be casual. Since there are many ways of being stylish in Italy, you as a traveler probably ought not concern yourself with fashion, but instead, like an Italian, construct yourself with a little thought to your body type, your activity and what makes you feel attractive. No matter what you wear, if you are taking a bit of care about what you put on, there's a group of Italians who are wearing the same thing - from the wealthy wearing designer originals to the teenager wearing the latest off the market stall, Italian style covers it all. http://www.beauty-and-romance-of-sicily.com/info-on-sicily.html

See everything. It's a beautiful country, the people are great, the scenery and food will both knock you off your feet. Rome will take a few days to see, a day or two each can cover most of the other cities. Major tourist attractions can sell out months ahead of time, especially in the summer. You can't go wrong with the Veneto, though Venice will spare no effort to remind you it's in a swamp on a hot day. I've seen a fair amount of the north, and loved every bit of it. Milan is a day trip. You'll want to move to Cinque Terre permanently. Train travel is an excellent way to get around, and not too expensive. Explore the churches, especially in Rome. Walk or bike if possible if you're in the old centers of towns/cities. Have a great time. And listen to Jimmy on what to where, he's spot on.

They dress well, study, enjoy life. They will drink, but not to excess, and some will take mild drugs. They are normal people.

Well you should dress ok but there's not an official dress code. As for behaviour, just be polite and friendly. With Professors you have to be very formal, especially when writing letters or emails, call him "Gentile Prof. Rossi". There are a lot of things to do, you can go out for a walk, go to a pub, go to a pizzeria to eat, ice-cream, discos, almost everything. Italians are very friendly if you know how to talk to them. Get a Facebook account if you don't have one - Italian students really love Facebook and it is a good way to get in touch with someone. Don't pretend the same organisation you will find in the United Kingdom or in Germany, but some Italian Universities are really ok.

I so badly want to be an exchange student in Italy for 3 months...but how do I convince my mum?4 DAYS 2GO?
UNTIL THE DEADLINE!!!! What can I say to mum. My dad is fine with it, he thinks its a great oppurtunity and he's willing to pay but my mum just wants the money for herself to pay boring bills and she says im too shy and pathetic to live among complee strangers in a foreign country. I told her it will help but she doesnt care.

1) 4 days to go? no chance. 2) bills may be boring but you have to pay them unless your ma wants a lenghty stay in jail or a visit from the reposessors. just try and talk to your mum show her the good points and advantages. you might have a chance.

I had exactly the same problem. I went to Germany for three months, and it really helped a lot. My parents said that it won't be worthwhile and i could get a dud family - truth is - i could of, but i didn't - my family was great. However i do know of a girl who had a really bad family, so she just got a new family, and another girl took it as an oportunity to see how other families can be second - it's a great way to improve your speaking skills ( i presume you speak italian?) before i went i was struggling to pass my German tests, and my last test i got back i received 78% not only will your school marks improve, but also your out look on the Australian culture, and how different it is to other parts of the world. School is a lot different (i never learnt anything over there because they all spoke really fast and were doing subjects way to complex for me) but even so just being a bystander was quite interesting And if your mum says your to shy tell her that over in another country you don't have the opportunity to be shy, everything is so weird and you have to ask random people things or you get lost or forever wonder what it was. I was shy to, but now i'm exactly the opposite it is definately worthwhile and if they don't let you go your education in anther language and culture is greatly hindered. You won't come back shy and you'll be fantastic at speaking Italian (if you give it a go while your their - whihc i strongly urge you to do) the only fault i can say an exchange has .... leaving.... it's horrible! everything is so much more fun over there! hope that helps, keep trying to persuade them, its worth it. good luck

Firstly what I would do is I'll try to get my dad to convince her for me. Then I would also tell her that this would be a great opportunity and it may never come again. Also I would tell her that this would be a great time to learn to live and make decisions on my own so when I leave home I will be able to support myself and not rely fully on them. Also try to pray. If you don't beleive in praying, do it anyway, if it is his will you will go. It worked for me, and now I am in Aussie studying. Took a while to convince my parents, but once they see how matured you're behaving, it will be the hardest thing, but they'll let you go. Good luck with that.
