immigration american to italy student/tourist visa question?
I am getting a student visa to get into italy but wanted to arrive a few days before my visa starts. Can i arrive as a tourist and then my visa time kicks in or do I need to wait until the date for my visa comes up and then go into italy? is that clear?

You as a US citizen can enter as a tourist Italy without a visa. Once your visa "kicks in" you have proof of lawful presence in Italy.
